Mary Moss surrounded by her current Year Two class on her last few days before her retirement after 20 years at St Anthony's

Mary Moss started at the Primate Road school on the day it opened in 1991.

In those days there were just 78 children in the whole school and she had about nine children in the reception class she taught. A bit of a change from the 48-to-a-class she had when she was doing her teaching practice.

Mrs Moss, who lives within walking distance of the school and can often be seen pulling her shopping trolley containing the books and things she needs for school, was given a great send off by her colleagues.

A celebration mass was held and she was presented with a Diocesan Medal, and later there was a ceilidh in her honour in the school which featured past members of staff, governors and friends from other schools.

So after 36 years as a teacher, and 20 at St Anthony’s, it will be quite a wrench to leave. “It has been a really happy time here,” she said.

“I will see a lot more of my husband Brian who has been a great support for me during my teaching career. I will also be spending time in my garden and catching up with reading and travelling.

“I just want to relax and have time to relax and enjoy my life.”

She added: “It has been a great privilege to have been a teacher and a privilege to have taught here.”
