Three schools in the Western Wards are closed today (June 30) as part of the national day of action by public sector employees.
Brookfield School, Park Gate Primary and St Anthony’s Primary School in Titchfield Common are closed as a result of the national strike action by teachers.
Those schools in the Western Wards that have been opened as usual are:
- Hook with Warsash Primary in Warsash
- Locks Heath Infants
- Locks Heath Juniors
- Sarisbury Infants
- Sarisbury Juniors
- St John’s Primary at Titchfield Common
- Whiteley Primary
- Titchfield Primary
A small number of teachers at some of those schools did stay away from work today, but the schools were still able to run normally. Larger numbers of staff stayed away from those that were forced to close.
The walkouts were called by The National Union of Teachers (NUT), the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) and the University and College Union (UCU) which are protesting over proposed changes to teachers’ pensions by the government.
It is the first time the ATL has ever held national strike action.
Across the UK a third of schools are expected to be closed, with another third partially-closed – meaning the teachers’ strike is expected to affect about 14,000 schools in total. A third are expected to be unaffected.
Other unions have warned of possible industrial action later in the year unless negotiations over public sector pensions can lead to a deal.
Services at job centres, air traffic control towers, prisons and courts across the UK will also be affected by the 24-hour strike action today. Unions estimate around 750,000 public sector workers will be on strike.
Travellers have been warned to expect delays on arrival at UK ports and airports.
